I could probably take a drive later and see it for myself.
A image search shows cows grazing in all directions. Some facing away and towards the rising/setting sun.
A theory for why they MOSTLY do it is due to winds mostly blowing East or West so they turn to the side. Also, the sun will hit them braodside in the morning and evening when rising and setting, warming them more efficiently.
It's all about the tan.

Fun Fact 2: That's where the word compass comes from, it used to be cowmpass, but the w got dropped along the way.

Heheheheh
I spent a summer with my cousin on his dairy farm when I was young. My job was to put the feed in the trough for the cows to eat while being milked. The cows faced the direction of the stall they were placed in, or they didn't eat (or get milked).

We made them surrender their compasses while they were in the building, so they didn't know.

Now, in the pasture, that may have been a different situation.

Time to admit it. You're just a guy whose ancestors raised cows for generations, and you are talking to a guy who took chemistry in college and knows everything about cows, just like he knows everything about everything.

I have a few ground feeders for when I have to separate heifers from bulls. When they are confined to a corral they graze in a circle.
