Non-political aspects of the universe (micro and macro) that catches your fancy and you want to share. Not so much entertainment or argument provocation as providing knowledge that may have somehow escaped one's notice!

I like the TIL (Today I Learned) subs on reddit.
This new topic might be a fun addition to the board.

And here's what prompted me!

I knew what "hemi" meant, as in hemispherical (half of a hemisphere) but I did like to know the origin of hemi. I checked Etymonline (The Etymology Dictionary) and IT said:

"hemi
word-forming element meaning "half," from Latin hemi- and directly from Greek hēmi- "half," from PIE root *semi-, which is the source of Sanskrit sami, Latin semi- (see semi-), Old High German sami- "half," and Old English sam-, denoting a partial or imperfect condition (see sandblind).

The Greek democracy (dēmokratia) came before the Roman Empire which borrowed dēmokratia which in Latin became democratia and I wondered, just how much Latin language derives from Greek and so I then found this... 8-)
