The Battle of Midway took place 4-7 June 1942 ending with the defeat of the Japanese navy in their attempt to take the Midway atoll. Japanese losses were the fleet carriers Akagi, Kaga, Soryu and Hiryu (all took part in the raid on Pearl Harbor), the heavy cruiser Mikuma, 248 aircraft of various types and 3,057 personnel killed, many of which were veteran aircrews. American loses included the fleet carrier USS Yorktown, the destroyer USS Hammann, 150 aircraft of various types and 307 personnel. This battle marked the end of Japanese expansion in the Pacific during WW2.

Something I forgot to add. Out of the 7 ships that were sunk during the battle only 4 have been located so far. USS Yorktown and USS Hammann were located in 1998 and IJN Akagi and IJN Kaga in 2019. If you're interested there are videos on YouTube of the wrecks of the 3 aircraft carriers taken by the submersibles that investigated them.

I've gone past the site many times (initially in a bus with my Mother in the '40s on the way to/from shopping in Philadelphia, later in my own cars in the early '60s). It was on Admiral Wilson Boulevard near what used to be the Airport Circle (when there was a small private airport).

Evidently it closed as a theater in 1940 but the site still had high, rusty sheet metal along the boulevard which had been erected to keep traffic jams from occurring as drivers stopped to get a free view of the movies... 8-)
